Spooky Lionfish and the Spear Boi”™ (Original Acrylic Painting) 24″x48″
Meet “Spooky Lionfish and the Spear Boi”™. This is an original 24″x48″ painting that Madison freehanded and is her take on a spooky spear fishermen hunting invasive lionfish along the coast of the Florida Panhandle. Although beautiful, the lionfish has quickly become a major problem along the coasts of the Southeast United States and especially here in the Florida panhandle. Lionfish are an invasive species not native here and are originally found in the Indo-Pacific. They have become a major problematic invasive species due to their love of eating large numbers of reef fish and other native fish and their devastating destruction they cause on the marine ecosystems found here and the Caribbean coastal waters as well as other locations in the Atlantic. Given the fact that they multiply quite rapidly, have large appetites, and are a poisonous spiky fish with venom capable of killing much larger predators, there are few predators that can keep them at bay and therefore, they seem to be here to stay and continue to thrive. However, the venomous spines can be removed from the lionfish and once removed, these fish are safe and quite delicious to eat. Many areas along the Southeast coasts, including the panhandle of Florida tackle the invasive lionfish by hosting lionfish removal events and tournaments where the goal is to catch and kill as many as you can. Spearfishing lionfish has quickly become quite the popular thrill and a wonderful fun solution to help keep their populations in check. Madison has always been fascinated by the Lionfish ever since she was a little girl and it was a “no brainer” for her to decide to paint one along with a spearfishermen in her “Spooky Boi”™ series to help bring awareness to this very beautiful, yet problematic fish. This painting is the 21st piece in her “Spooky Boi” series.
