Roatan is part of the Bay Islands, nestled around 30 miles north of Honduras in the southwest corner of the Caribbean. Roatan is part of the second largest barrier reef in the world, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Roatan features vibrant coral, multicolored tropical fish, large sponges and sealife such as manta rays, sea turtles and whale sharks! This amazing reef system brings divers from all over the world making this a very popular dive destination.
Roatan has a huge array of accommodations, all-inclusive resorts to budget hotels, one of the Top 10 Best Beaches in the World and there’s plenty to do topside for non-diving partners. Roatan is an amazing place to take the plunge and dive sites second to none.
Visibility – Visibility is amazing in the Roatan from 24-45 meters/80-150 feet. During the rainy season however, visibility greatly decreases from the runoff into the sea (June-July & October-February).
Water Temp – Water averages 25° C/78° F in winter and 29° C/84° F in summer.
Weather – Diving is great all year and warm tropical weather is the norm, with little change in temperature from winter to summer – the average being 29° C/85° F. Humidity is usually high, especially from May to September. June through October is hurricane season in the Caribbean.
Sealife – Looking for a whale shark? They are around all year, but the best chance is off the north of the island of Utila from March to May and August to October. Utile is about 18 miles west of Roatan. There are more than 300 identified fish species in the Bay Islands. The most commonly seen sealife while diving are dolphins, grouper, rays, barracuda, angelfish, butterfly fish, grunts, parrotfish, yellowtail snapper, horse-eye jack, octopus, lobsters, crabs, moray eels and nurse sharks.
Recommended Certification Level – Open Water will take you to all the dive sites in Roatan, but to experience the best of those sites having your Advanced Open Water certification is recomended. Nitrox is also a good choice as enriched air nitrox is available in the islands and with no extra charge at most shops. Technical diving is also available.
